Crimefighters are urging residents to
be extra vigilant when Christmas shopping.
Members of the Hambleton and
Richmondshire Community Safety Partnerships want to make sure that
the festive season is not spoiled by criminals.
The top tips to prevent Christmas crime
are:
have your purse/wallet close to your body and
don’t carry too much cash when in the shops and when travelling on
crowded buses or trains
- if you travel by car, park with care in busy, well lit areas if
possible, near CCTV cameras or in police approved car parks
- if you must leave presents in the car, leave them out of sight
in the boot and keep the car locked
- don’t leave anything in your car when it is parked overnight –
63% of thefts occur outside the home
- don’t make it easy from someone to steal from your home – keep
your presents out of sight and if you ‘hide’ or store larger items
such as bikes in the shed or outbuildings make sure they are
secure
- remember empty boxes left outside advertise that you have new
goods inside – dispose of packing carefully
- if you go out for the evening make it look like someone is at
home – leave lights and the radio on and don’t leave curtains open
so people can see your decorations as potential thieves can see
