Cheap compost bins and green johannas are now on offer to Hambleton and Richmondshire residents.
The York and North Yorkshire Waste Partnership is working with Great Green Systems Ltd to provide subsidised compost bins and food waste digesters.
“Composting helps us to reduce the amount of waste we put in our rubbish bins,” said Recycling Officer, Lucy Woodall.
“By simply placing some of your kitchen waste, garden rubbish, shredded cardboard and newspaper in the bin there will be a constant source of nutritious compost for your garden within six months. And by investing in one of the bins we have on offer residents can do this very cheaply.”
By using compost when preparing flower beds and containers gardeners can reap the benefits of the high levels of organic matter, slow release natural fertilizers and as a result get longer lasting, brighter blooms. In addition, using compost as a mulch on top of containers or flower beds will substantially reduce water loss through evaporation and help keep the weeds down.
The 220 litre compost bin is just £15 and the 330 litre compost bins are £17 - including delivery.
Green Johannas - which take cooked and uncooked food waste as well as garden waste - are available at £59.
