A part-time firefighter has been
honoured for his dedication to the local community.

Roger Iveson has been a retained fireman at
Hawes Fire Station for 33 years – spending the last 18 of them as
officer in charge.
And in recognition for always putting this
duty first – over and above his electrical business and his family
– he has been presented with the 2011 Richmondshire District
Council Chairman’s Award for Service to the Community’.
“Roger is an inspirational and selfless man
who places the needs of his community before his own, the needs of
his family and his business,” said Former Chairman of the Council,
Councillor Yvonne Peacock.
“Not only does he work as a firefighter but
two members of the staff at his Hawes business - JR Iveson
Electricals – also work as part time firefighters.
So every time an emergency call comes in the
business suffers!
“His ‘can do’ attitude and his attentiveness
to the fire service outside his normal commitments encourages
others to follow him – making the Hawes team highly motivated and
consistently high performers.”
She said that Roger always puts the fire
service first - he discusses the service with key members of the
community, his customers and local people; attends local fire
safety events; and supports Richmondshire Community Safety
Partnership campaigns.
“Roger carries out his fire service role in a
professional, enthusiastic and selfless manner that is nothing
short of awe inspiring to everyone that he knows. His drive and
ambition are contagious. He motivates the staff at Hawes Station to
achieve excellent results,” she added.
- 'The Chairman’s Award for Service to the community’ is
presented to individuals, groups and organisations throughout
Richmondshire in recognition of significant achievement and
outstanding effort in all walks of life.
