Plans to create a new café in
Richmond’s Friary Gardens have been rejected by district
councillors.
Members of the Planning Committee refused
proposals to convert the Tourist Information Centre on Victoria
Road into a new centre with café and outdoor seating.
The outdoor area proposed paving existing
flowerbeds and grassed areas in the memorial park.
But members were told there had been a wave of
objections to the development saying it would affect the image of
Richmond as a historic market town; there are already enough cafes;
and that it would detract from the memorial gardens.
“Whilst we all acknowledge that Richmond needs
a tourist information service these proposals were just not
appropriate in such a special and sensitive location - and members
voted overwhelmingly to reject them," said Councillor Jane Parlour,
Member for Green Living.
