A green fingered couple who ‘adopted’
a piece of council land in the middle of a village housing estate
are winners in a new gardening competition.

John and Sheila Templeton took one of the
prizes in the Richmondshire District Council contest. They
created a garden on a piece of unwanted land near their Brompton on
Swale home and were judged for that as well as their own
garden.
Council tenants in Richmondshire had been
encouraged to make their gardens look blooming lovely this summer
for a brand new competition to find the best gardens, window boxes,
tubs, baskets, borders and vegetable patches. They had a
month to get their plots into top condition before they were
‘mystery judged’.
They were judged in the five areas of the
district – Central, Garrison, Lower Wensleydale, North
Richmondshire and Upper Dales.
“We created this competition to recognise the
efforts that our tenants make to brighten up their streets and
estates by creating and maintaining lovely gardens,” said
Councillor Peter Wood, Member for Housing.
“It was a very hard task deciding who were the
winners because there were so many excellent and colourful
displays. Congratulations must go to them all.”
