People living in Hambleton and
Richmondshire are some of the most physically active in the
country.
Around 30% of them take regular exercise –
compared to 22% nationally.
The data comes from the largest single survey
of sport and active recreation ever undertaken in the UK.
The Active People survey commissioned by Sport
England found that 28% of over 16s living in Hambleton and 31.3% in
Richmondshire regularly take part in sport and active recreation.
In North Yorkshire the average is 24.9%, Yorkshire 22.5% and
nationally 22.1%
The survey has provided statistical
information about levels of participation across the country – by
geographic area, age group, sex, disabled / non-disabled, ethnicity
and socio-economic group. It measures how many people do 3 lots of
30 minutes moderate to vigorous physical activity per week – which
medical professionals say is the amount necessary to improve an
individual’s health.
Hambleton and Richmondshire District Councils
– through the Active Hambleton and Active Richmondshire campaigns –
work with a range of organisations, including Catterick Garrison to
raise sport and physical activity participation.
“These results are a testament to the work
done all over the districts by sports clubs, coaches and facility
operators – but mostly to the residents themselves who are taking
up sport and active recreation,” said David Goodwin, Assistant
Director for Hambleton and Richmondshire District Councils.
