People living in Hambleton and
Richmondshire continue to be some of the most physically active in
the country.
Around 27% take regular exercise – compared to
22% nationally.
The Active People survey commissioned by Sport
England - the largest single survey of sport and active recreation
ever undertaken in the UK - found that 27.7% of over 16s living in
Hambleton and 26.7% in Richmondshire regularly take part in sport
and active recreation. In North Yorkshire the average is 24.2%,
Yorkshire 22.9% and nationally 21.8%
The latest results place Hambleton first in
North Yorkshire and 11th out of 325 local authorities
nationally. Richmondshire is placed second and 23rd
respectively.
The survey has provided statistical
information about levels of participation across the country – by
geographic area, age group, sex, disabled / non-disabled, ethnicity
and socio-economic group. It measures how many people do three lots
of 30 minutes moderate to vigorous physical activity per week –
which medical professionals say is the amount necessary to improve
an individual’s health.
Hambleton and Richmondshire District Councils
– through Active Hambleton and Active Richmondshire campaigns –
work with a range of organisations, including Catterick Garrison,
to raise sport and physical activity participation.
“These results endorse the fantastic work that
has already been done – and continues to be done - by both
authorities as well as being encouraging for future physical
activity projects,” said Julie Hannon, Sport England Relationship
Manager for Local Government.
