Enhancements to the refuse and
recycling service in Richmondshire have gone live this week.
Richmondshire District Council now operates a new, smaller
vehicle to operate "mini" collection rounds, in addition to those
already carried out by the larger fleet.
This new service will allow the Council to resolve a number of
issues with the new district-wide alternate weekly collection
service. It will mean an additional cost to the authority – of
about £48,000 a year – but it is likely that extra income raised
from the value of recycled materials will offset this cost.
Not only will the new vehicle free up time on other collection
routes, it will also help with the delivery of new or replacement
bins and providing special assisted collections.
The scheme was approved by councillors in September. Council
officers have been visiting residents at the properties covered by
the new vehicle to agree their individual collection
arrangements.
Councillor Russell Lord, the Council's spokesperson for Green
Living, said: "We are confident the new service will resolve a
number of outstanding concerns. Although the new vehicle will
obviously cost more to operate, the big increase in recycling by
residents since we rolled out alternate weekly collections should
raise enough money to cover it."
