Local authorities and emergency services are working in
partnership in Richmondshire to cut the number of people killed and
seriously injured on the district's roads this Christmas.
Richmondshire Community Safety Partnership (RCSP) is
coordinating the road safety message, bringing together
Richmondshire District Council, North Yorkshire County Council
(NYCC), North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and North Yorkshire
Police.
Officers have been targeting motorists who may be at risk -
including the Fire and Rescue Service and NYCC Road Safety Officers
talking to young drivers about the dangers of drink driving, as
well as an accident demonstration for young recruits based at
Catterick Garrison, when a soldier was cut from a car. In total,
they have given about 80 talks on drink driving, reaching more than
6,000 people. They have also been visiting local schools to talk
about the importance of wearing a seatbelt on a bus or in a
car.
In addition, there will be 18 police checkpoints around
Richmondshire to catch anyone who tries to drink and drive over the
festive season, and speed matrix detectors will be deployed at key
speeding hotspots.
A spokesman for RCSP said: "We are working particularly hard in
the run-up to Christmas to spread the road safety message as widely
as possible. Our aim is simple - to reduce the number of people
killed or seriously injured on Richmondshire's roads."
