Personal ashtrays – get yours in time for the party season
FREE personal ashtrays are being handed out in an effort to clean up Richmondshire's streets.
Richmondshire Community Safety Partnership (RCSP) has joined forces with Richmondshire District Council's Environmental Services team to tackle unsightly litter from cigarette butts.
The ashtrays were first given out last year, in the run-up to the ban on smoking in public places on July 1. But more are now available, just in time for the festive party season.
Kate Davies, RCSP community safety officer, said: "There has been a significant rise in the incidence of litter from cigarette butts nationally since smoking ban came into force on July 1. It's an unpleasant problem, and one that is mentioned time and time again when we ask people about issues in their neighbourhoods.
"These ashtrays are a great way to help responsible smokers tackle the problem – and best of all, they're free! Residents can collect them at all the Community Offices throughout the district, and we have already been busy handing them out at pubs and festivals."

You can hear more about the ashtrays in an interview with Kate broadcast on Garrison Radio on Monday, January 21, 2008.
