A strategy outlining the way the District Council
plans to approach waste management for the next 12 years has been
published.
Refuse collections, recycling, street cleansing, litter, dog
fouling and abandoned vehicles are amongst the issues tackled in
the Integrated Waste Management Strategy for Richmondshire. The
strategy also sets out planned improvements to the way the Council
disposes of its own waste.
"It’s the first time we have produced a plan which draws
together all the issues we face on the subject of waste
management," explains Head of Environmental Protection, Sean
Little. "Increasing amounts of waste are being created every year
in this country, and although our recycling rates are improving, we
face enormous challenges for the future."
The strategy sets 30 targets to be achieve and is working
towards 5 key outcomes:
- Minimise the amount of waste produced
- Maximise the amount of waste recycled
- Collect, and raise awareness of the safe disposal of
"difficult" waste
- Improve local environmental quality
- Increase awareness of and participation in reduction, reuse and
recycling of waste.
