Volunteers are needed to help launch a new mediation
service.
It’s hoped Richmondshire residents involved in disputes with
their neighbours will benefit from the new initiative, run by the
District Council in conjunction with Arch Mediation Services, using
a network of volunteer mediators.
"Community, or neighbourhood mediation is about helping
conflicting parties address their differences, which often involve
problems surrounding levels of noise, verbal abuse or parking
disputes," says Anti-Social Behaviour Co-ordinator, Becky Allan. "I
will be working with Arch and our volunteer mediators to help the
opposing parties reach agreement and find ways of moving the
situation forward."
The District Council’s Housing and Environment Units are
funding the initiative with Richmondshire Community Safety
Partnership.
"We are looking for people who are good communicators, patient
and can be impartial," adds Becky Allen. "As a mediator you will
get excellent training and expenses. You can work to suit you,
probably a couple of times per month, and fit it in around school
times or your existing job, plus you’ll be helping your community
address anti social behaviour."

- Richmondshire District Council is also working with the YMCA to
provide a homelessness mediation service for young people
considering leaving home as a result of dispute with their family
or carers.
