Tourism volunteers donate to local attractions

Richmondshire District Council has paid tribute to its team of dedicated volunteers, and two local attractions have benefited as a direct result of their commitment and knowledge.

37 volunteers, who help at Tourist Information Centres in the District, and give guided walking tours of Richmond, were invited to join staff at a ceremony in Swale House.  Council Chairman, Councillor Jill McMullon presented cheques totalling £584 to representatives from The Richmondshire Museum and Georgian Theatre Royal, on behalf of the volunteer guides who raise the money through donations from their walking tours.

There are currently 10 independent volunteer guides giving daytime and evening walking tours of Richmond throughout the year.  In addition, 27 volunteers give up their spare time to assist the 13 Tourist Information Centre staff in Richmond and Leyburn.

"I'm very pleased to be able to make this donation", says Councillor McMullon.  "Our volunteers are incredibly knowledgeable and totally dedicated and their efforts have, once again, benefited two popular local attractions, whilst supporting the very important and vibrant local tourism economy.”

In the last 6 years, volunteers have donated more than £3700 to the museum and theatre.
