Residents are settling in to new affordable housing in
Brompton on Swale.
The five new bungalows, built on a former District Council
owned garage site, in partnership with Tees Valley Housing Group,
are the final homes to be completed in the scheme, which has seen
40 garages demolished to create 32 new homes throughout the
District.
“It’s made a tremendous difference living here”, says resident
Margaret Knowles, pictured above with husband Maurice. “We
used to have a house but both of us now find walking up and down
stairs too difficult to manage. The rooms are very spacious,
we love it, and it has made life much easier.”
“They are well built”, adds Joyce McQuilkin. “My
daughter lives nearby and moving here means that she is able to pop
in and see me every day, which is a big help.”
Richmondshire District Council has created a total of 28
affordable homes in the past year, aiming for a target of 300 by
2010.
“It is a tough total to reach in our District”, explains Chair
of the Council’s Community Committee, Councillor Peter Wood.
“We have to try and build a few here, and a few there, but we are
continually looking for suitable new sites, and working with
landowners and parish councils to identify areas where new homes
can be built.”
More affordable housing is underway at Gallowgate and in Nuns
Close in Richmond, as well as in Hawes and Middleham, some of which
will be completed before the end of the year. Planning
permission has been granted for 15 new homes in Bainbridge.
