More than 200 residents attended an affordable housing
consultation in Scotton last week, (Monday 13 November) but there
is still an opportunity for people to comment.
A plot of land next to the village hall is being considered
for the new affordable homes, and residents were invited to find
out more about the potential for housing at the event. The
District Council needs to hear from local people who cannot afford
to live or buy locally, before any homes can be built.
“There were mixed views expressed at the meeting, ranging from
very enthusiastic to complete opposition”, says Richmondshire
District Council’s Policy Officer, Kirsty Haslam. “Some
residents did express concerns over the potential development, and
these are being looked into, however, we know from previous survey
work undertaken there are also a large group of people who cannot
afford a home locally. Those who think they would benefit
from any new development of affordable housing in the village
should submit an
expression of
interest form via the affordable housing section of the
Council website, or contact me to complete the form. Despite
surveys we have done in the past demonstrating there is a need for
affordable housing in the village, we must demonstrate that the
need is current for the development to progress to the next
stage.”
“Providing affordable housing is one of our top priorities,
and we have an ambitious target of providing 60 new homes a year”,
adds Chair of the Council’s Community Committee, Councillor Peter
Wood. “It’s very important to work with parish councils and
local landowners to identify sites, such as this, which have the
potential for development, and work with the community to achieve
more housing for local people.”
