VOLUNTEERS
PRAISED
Volunteers who support Richmondshire District Council's two
tourist centres have helped them reach new heights in national
rankings.
The 2009 VisitEngland Mystery Shopper ranked Richmond Tourist
Information Centre first in Yorkshire with Leyburn just three
places below in fourth position. And nationally Richmond is
third in the league tables and Leyburn 16th.
The achievement was celebrated with volunteers earlier this
month when a cheque for £399.03 was presented to the Richmondshire
Museum – cash collected by nine Richmond volunteer guides during
the last 12 months. That money brought the total raised
by those volunteers in the last seven years to £4000.
Council Chairman, Councillor Helen Grant, paid tribute to the 37
volunteers who between them have given over 300 years free support
– with four of them giving 90 of those years!
"We are very proud of the two centres run in Richmondshire – the
service provided is second to none, borne out by the recently
achieved rankings," she said.
"We also increased retail sales by 12% this year and saw 11%
more people come through the doors which in these difficult times
is a major achievement. We now look forward to a busy
2010."
