An emergency communication system which offers lifesaving help at the touch of a button has celebrated 20 years of supporting Richmondshire residents.

Richmondshire District Council's Lifeline Service enables its users to call for help at any time, day or night. Lifeline customers include people who are elderly, disabled, recuperating or caring for others, and who want to maintain their independence while giving themselves and their loved ones extra peace of mind.

The service was launched back in April 1988 by a team that included Head of Supported Housing Gavin White and Resident Warden Jacqui Jinks. Both still work for the Council – and both attended a party to celebrate Lifeline's 20th birthday.

Also at the party – held in the sheltered housing scheme in Queens Court, Richmond – were former and current Lifeline mobile wardens and helpline operators, as well as the Council's former Chief Housing Officer John Barlow, who played a key role in setting up the service.

Missing from the event due to ill health was John Woodrow, a former Chairman of Richmondshire District Council, and the driving force behind the Lifeline service. He also set up the John Woodrow Lifeline Trust fund, which helps more than 100 people to use Lifeline.

Mr White said: "Lifeline is actually named after a brand of alarm equipment – but it has literally been a true lifesaver for so many people over the years. Everyone involved in Lifeline has lots of memories of the last two decades, where the service for some has been a true lifeline.

"Lifeline is more than just a helpline. We visit you to explain how the system works, to install the equipment and to make sure all is well. The service is going from strength to strength."

Councillor Helen Grant, Richmondshire District Council's Member Champion for Older People, was also at the birthday party. She said: "From a family experience I know exactly how valuable Lifeline can be. It is an invaluable service, allowing people to stay in their own homes, giving them more independence and giving their families more peace of mind."

Lifeline was set up as a partnership between Richmondshire District Council (which provides the alarm equipment and mobile wardens) and Ryedale District Council (which provides the control centre) and now plays a part in the Government's Telecare initiative. The service is used by more than 1,100 people across Richmondshire.

Customers are provided with a Lifeline Unit which enables them to call the control centre at the press of the button, 24 hours a day. An operator will then speak to the caller and summon help if required.

Richmondshire residents can find out more about the Lifeline Service by phoning 01748 829100.
