CCTV SYSTEM NOT TO BE REDEPLOYED

Richmondshire councillors are recommending that a system of CCTV cameras is not to be reinstated in Richmond town centre.

Members of the District Council’s Corporate Board last night (Tuesday June 13) agreed to recommend to full council that the authority does not redeploy cameras in the market place.

They were decommissioned in 2014, after 14 years, when the district council, Richmond Town Council and local businesses decided they could not afford to continue to run and monitor them.

A council led review started 18 months ago has looked at whether they should be reinstated – which would cost £39,500 to install and almost £30,000 per year to operate and monitor.

“Crime is relatively low in Richmond town centre and the town is recognised as a safe place to live,” said Deputy Leader, Councillor Ian Threlfall.

“We have recommended to full council that we do not reinstate the cameras in Richmond but we will look to help communities and business associations wanting to operate a scheme themselves.”
