FIRST NEW COMMUNITY LED HOUSE DEVELOPMENT GETS GO AHEAD

Richmondshire welcomes its first Community Led Housing scheme, the first of its type in North Yorkshire which is to be built in Hudswell. This small settlement, famous for its community pub, also has a local charity that provides housing, which is let to local residents in housing need.

Hudswell Community Charity already owns and manages three properties towards the west end of the village and they have been working for the past three years to put together proposals to construct three more homes to be rented to local people from Hudswell or neighbouring Downholme.

Don Farrar, chair of the Charity said “We know that many people who have strong local connections cannot afford to buy a home in Hudswell, so we are helping to meet the need for affordable rented housing, which allows people in this position to stay, or move back to the village.”

Martin Booth (Secretary) and Annie Sumner (Treasurer) have recently signed the Building Contract with Acomb Construction Ltd, who are pleased to be starting on site on Monday 20th March. This concludes a long period of gaining planning permission, putting together a funding package, which included a £40,000 grant from Richmondshire District Council and then tendering the contract briefs to builders. Now their idea will become a reality as the new homes will be ready by the end of 2017.

The accommodation will be built by local developer Acomb Construction Ltd, on land known as Thompsons Field that was endowed to the Charity from a local benefactor to benefit the community. There will be one, two-bedroom bungalow and two, three-bedroom semidetached homes with off road parking and their own garden. All three properties will be built of natural stone with blue slate roofs and sash windows to preserve the national parks design standards

Richmondshire District Council Leader, Cllr Yvonne Peacock said “The District Council was delighted to be able to support the Community Led Housing project in Hudswell as the first of its kind in North Yorkshire and we hope that the great work that they have been doing inspires other community groups to bring forward additional projects across the District. We are fully committed to supporting the delivery of affordable housing especially in our rural areas and want to hear from any Parish or community group who have similar plans”.
