Richmondshire District Council is to receive almost £500,000 in extra Government funding to help local communities develop new housing in their area.
The funding, which comes from a national fund of £60 million, is specifically designed to help interested communities develop housing for the benefit of their local area.
Councillor Yvonne Peacock, Leader of the Council, explained: “This is very good news for those community groups interested in developing housing for the benefit of their local area. The funding can be used to help community groups through the often complex process of translating a need for local housing into new homes on the ground. The funding can also be used to inject cash into a community led housing project where there is evidence of a funding shortfall. This funding is all about local communities developing new housing and then having a long term stake in that housing – options can range from creating co-operatives through to land trusts or other management models. We already have potential interest from a number of community groups in our district and we are actively seeking other interested communities to come forward”.
