BUSINESS RATE CHANGES – COUNCIL OFFERS HELP

Richmondshire business leaders have been briefed on the implications of future changes to business rates.
They met with officers and members of the District Council this week at a session organised by the authority – which administers the issuing of business rate bills and collection of money due.
One of the key changes affecting business ratepayers in the short term is the revaluation of business properties across the country that comes into effect this April. The valuations - assessed by the Valuation Office - have resulted in some major changes affecting individual businesses.
“Whilst the rateable values of some businesses have reduced the Council is aware that some businesses in the area have seen a six-fold increase,” said Council Leader, Councillor Yvonne Peacock.
“It is not the Councils’ responsibility to set rateable values but as the administering authority we are keen to support our business ratepayers. Businesses are encouraged, in the first instance to follow up queries with the Valuation Office, but the Council will also offer advice and support.”
