To help us improve how we engage with our communities, we have introduced the concept of "Area Based Working".

Area Based Working Map

By recognising that different parts of the District have  different needs and issues, Area Based Working is designed to identify these certain area issues and address priorities at a local level. In order to do so, we have designated five separate areas of Richmondshire based on local service centres:

  • North Richmondshire
  • Centre
  • The Garrison Area
  • Lower Wensleydale
  • Upper Dales

We hope by doing this, we find residents will become more involved in decisions which affect them, as well as having a better understanding of what the area’s priorities are and how to help deal with them. Each area also has its own detailed evidence based profile, building a picture of the place and the people who live and work there.

This approach will provide an opportunity to discuss local concerns and issues, and will be one of the main ways in which we engage with our communities. We hope we can get district councillors, parish councillors, members of the public and representatives of community groups, local businesses, partners and other agencies involved.

North Richmondshire Area

Settlements more closely aligned to Tees Valley from Barnard Castle to Darlington along the A66, A1M and A167 routes.  The landscape is mainly Tees lowland, but with a high ridge that separates the Tees and Swale watersheds.  It has a fairly remote rural character, despite sitting between the towns of Barnard Castle, Richmond and Darlington.  The major A1 and A66 transport routes, converge at Scotch Corner.  This famous intersection was originally built by the Romans, who took control of the North at the battle of Scotch Corner in AD 71.

Lower Wensleydale Area

The Lower Wensleydale area sits between the Yorkshire Dales National Park in the west and the Vale of York in the East.  It is an extensive rural area of high landscape value around the River Ure.

Its main settlements are Leyburn and Middleham, which provide a central focus for several smaller villages.  Historically this area has provided the gateway for travellers heading west over the dales, with Middleham and Bolton Castles a reminder of its strategic significance.

Upper Dales Area

Upper Dales is a large upland area of the district split by valleys of Arkengarthdale, Swaledale, Coverdale, Bishopdale and Wensleydale.  This area is almost exclusively covered by the Yorkshire Dales National Park.  It is a major tourist area with extensive areas of natural beauty and the scars of its lead mining heritage.  Lead mining activity peaked in the mid 19th century and was all but spent by the end of the 19th century.
