Tea rooms are a staple of Dales life, and you need never go far without stopping to refuel with another tea, coffee or homemade cake.

  • Upstairs at Serendipity in Leyburn, is a calm, and elegant tea room, with emphasis on home baking, generous portions and impeccable presentation.
  • For a relaxing pot of tea and cream scone try Ghyllfoot and Penny Farthing Tearoom and Restaurant, in Gunnerside. Phone 01748 886239.
  • Cuckoo Hill View is an ice cream parlour on Reeth Green
  • Overlooking Bainbridge Green, the Cornmill Tea Room provides a welcome oasis for visitors for afternoon tea, lunch, coffee or a snack, all using local produce. Phone 01969 650212.
  • Just a few yards from the magnificent Hardraw Force waterfall, The Cart House Craft and Tea Shop at Hardraw near Hawes is a family-run tea room, serving wholesome home-cooked food, using organic ingredients where possible.  
  • The child-friendly Lakeside Farm Shop in Scorton has a café, a play area and an understanding owner.  Sarah Thompson aims for healthy food and ensures that even the burgers and chips are real, homemade and using the best quality fresh local ingredients.
  • A good place to try a traditional Yorkshire Fat Rascal is Leyburn Tea Room. Set within the Dales Haven Guest House, the large picture window enjoys a great view of the surrounding area. Phone 01969 623814.
  • In the secluded hamlet of Whaw, near Arkengarthdale, Chapel Farm House offers a welcome rest from the days activities. Phone 01748 884062.
  • A variety of home made cakes and scones, including a speciality Yorkshire Afternoon Tea are on the menu at Ivy Cottage in Reeth. Phone 01748 884418.
  • Set in an old vicarage, Muker Village Stores and Teashop has two Victorian rooms with open fires and an outdoor patio for warmer days. Cream teas, light lunches, cakes and snacks are available with freshly ground coffee or Yorkshire tea.
  • The restaurant at Kearton Country Hotel in Thwaite incorporates a tea room where snacks can be taken through the day.
  • The Old Town Hall tea room in Redmire is bright and modern, offering afternoon and cream teas, hot and cold sandwiches, soup and home baked cake.
  • The Bakery Café in Reeth is a tiny tea room adjoining the bakery.
  • Hidden away above a shop in the centre of Richmond is the relaxed and friendly Coffee Bean. At one time the building was a printing works owned by John Bell. Phone 01748 821821.
  • Sip Coffee, Richmond is a relaxing place for a coffee break, with a couple of comfy leather chairs, newspapers available and local art adorning the walls. Phone 01748 822877.
  • Sticky Ginger in Askrigg offers takeaway meals as well as homemade soup, light lunches, afternoon teas, and home-baked cakes, all using local ingredients.
  • A large mug of tea and a bacon butty awaits you after a long ride or walk through the Dales at the Penny Garth Café in Hawes, a popular meeting point for decades for motorcyclists, cyclists, campers and walkers.
  • Beckindales Continental Café, Hawes has an extensive coffee list, and seating inside and out – a perfect place to unwind after a day cheese shopping in Hawes. Phone 01969 667784.
  • The Cornmill Tearoom, Bainbridge, is a converted corn and cake mill, overlooking Bainbridge Green, offering lunches, afternoon tea, coffee and light snacks. Phone 01969 650212.
  • Known locally as ‘Karen’s, The Coppice Café is found close to Aysgarth Falls and has indoor and outdoor seating and a flexible menu with smaller portions available for smaller appetites, plus a children’s menu and special diet menu.
  • The Mill Race Tea Shop in Aysgarth is situated on the bridge overlooking Aysgarth Upper Falls, and prides itself on its high quality homemade food made from local ingredients.
  • The Copper Kettle in Reeth offers a relaxing cup of tea and a scone. Phone 01748 884748.
  • William’s Tea Rooms is a great combination of delicatessen and tearooms, in Richmond’s market place.  Above the deli, on the first and second floor the tearooms offer fresh foods, from Yorkshire scones and handmade cakes, to light lunches and soup.
  • You can sit in the window or on the small tables outside The Nosebag in Middleham and watch the racehorses pass by as you sample tasty homemade snacks and speciality coffees.
  • Jervaulx Abbey Tearooms is next to the car park for Jervaulx Abbey and serves lunches or freshly baked cakes and scones, or local Brymor Ice Cream.
  • Just down the road from Jervaulx is Brymor Ice Cream where you can enjoy more than 30 types of ice cream, made from the milk of pedigree Guernsey cows that graze just yards away from the parlour.
