The green rolling hills and attractive villages of Richmondshire make it perfect walking countryside. There are also plenty of tea shops and pubs, so it’s worth planning some stops along the way.

  • A good selection of detailed walks from the ‘Her Masters Walks’ series of books are available on line. From 5.5 to 9 miles long they have starting points in Gunnerside (walk no 1), Reeth (no 2), Appersett near Hawes (no 3) Aysgarth Falls (no 4), Richmond (no 7) and Keld (no 8). Use the ‘walks’ clickthrough on the bottom of the web page www.hm-walks.co.uk/home_nf.htm.
  • Wensleydale and Swaledale are the heart of Herriot country. If you’re a James Herriot fan, or just enjoy the beautiful Dales scenery and distinctive stone barns and villages, you could consider walking or driving the James Herriot way, or select just part of it. The circular route is intended to take 4-5 days, walking around 13 miles each day, and takes in Aysgarth, Hawes, Keld, Reeth, Grinton and Askrigg. Visit www.sherpavan.com/trails/herriot_way.asp.
  • Dalesbus has put together a selection of walks which are accessible from Richmond and Reeth. The walks have been devised for those staying in the area and relying on public transport, but are equally good for those with own transport.   For a variety of abilities from 1.5 to 12.5 miles, taking in some breathtaking scenery. Clickthrough ‘walking in the Dales’ from the Dalesbus website www.dalesbus.org, and browse through the various clickthrough options.
  • A choice of two walks, from 3 to 5 miles around Gilling West can be found at www.gillingwest.org.uk/Walks/Walksindex.htm.
  • A brief description of bridleways and public footpaths near the picturesque village of Whashton will help you choose which way to explore, at www.communigate.co.uk/ne/whashton/page4.phtml.
  • A small selection of circular walks from Aysgarth Falls or Richmond are available at www.daleswalks.co.uk.
